Proby’s 70th Birthday

On 6 November 2008 it was PJs 70th Birthday. He celebrated this at home in Evesham among friends. On 15 November The Heritage Foundation honoured P.J. Proby with  a combined Christmas / Birthday dinner in the London Marriot Hotel. David Graham had done a great job organising it all! It was a wonderful night!

To start with, P.J. was called in after everybody was seated and received a grande applause. Presenter of the night was PJs old friend Radio London dj Mike Read, now still with BigL. He started with some footage of how PJ came into England with the Around The Beatles show and his interview with Hold Me. These were all high quality versions of the footage that can be found on YouTube. Amongst the speakers was dj Kid Jenson!

On PJs two tables were among others: Pat Hayley, Annabel Leventon, Robert Pratt, Heinryck Berler and Peter Brown plus partners. Of course this was also where you could find Jean Williams & Chris, Margaret Hartley and daughter Carol, Stephen Munns and Brian & Manja Dolan.

Sadly Debra Franks, Elisabeth and Hannah couldn’t make it.

During the courses of the Christmas Dinner, PJ received a lot of presents from his friends and from the fans. He chatted with Billy Davis, Jett Harris, Les Reed, and many more people, as you can see on the photos.

Letters of congratulation from Robin Gibb and Jess Conrad (who arrived later) were read out and presents were presented to PJ. He received an oil painted portrait and a beautiful hat amongst others.

PJ got a beautiful birthday cake that weighed 50 pounds! All chocolate cake and pure chocolate. It was enormous and had a beautiful big sculpture on it of a guitar, cowboy boots and a Texas flag, all chocolate! PJ did a beautiful job, giving the first cut! As  PJ was completely closed in behind the table by all photographers, Les Reed came to the rescue, while Billy Davis lead the audience into singing Happy Bithday!

Then followed the auction on behalf of the Bomber Command. Mike Read did a great job. A lot of money was raised. Topper was a guitar, signed by PJ Proby that went for £2100 and was bought by Pete Brown! Then Les Reed contributed some sheet music of his songs, signed by him and PJ, that went for ±£250,-

This was a good opportunity for Les and PJ to do some improvisations! With just Les Reed on keyboard and PJ singing, they did Somewhere and surprised the audience with Delilah! PJ narrated the story behind his recording of Delilah and promised he would do it better justice this time. He did a beautiful job,

reading the lyrics from a sheet, singing with his

reading glasses on! This was a completely

unrehearsed event, which showed what

a great team Les and PJ make!

After this Joe Goodman did a very funny spot!

The night ended with the band The Dave Stark Five playing dance music, including Hold Me! Also Lou "Elvis" Jordan gave a great performance.

PJ stayed talking in the foyer till 3 AM and truly enjoyed the evening.

The fans had plenty of opportunity to have their photo taken with PJ and we had to make sure they didn’t fall over PJ all at the same time!

Thanks everybody, for making this happen!!!
